What is social listening?

A practical definition of social listening, how it differs from monitoring, and how to start a programme that leadership will use.

Social listening is the disciplined collection and analysis of public online conversation about brands, products, people, campaigns and topics. The output should be decisions: what to inspect, who to brief, whether a campaign landed, whether reputation is drifting.

Start with questions, not keywords. “Are customers complaining about delivery in our launch city?” is a better brief than “track our brand name.” Then map those questions to queries, sources and owners.

A minimum viable programme usually includes: your brand names and common misspellings; two or three competitors; campaign terms during a launch; a short list of risk phrases; and a weekly 30-minute review, not a 24/7 war room you will abandon.

Measure volume, but do not stop there. Add sentiment as triage, topics for explanation, and alerts for unusual change. Report in narrative form. Directors do not action a CSV.

Brand254 is built around that loop: discover, understand, ask, act. The same method applies whether you are watching one market or several.
